Abstract:

In this talk, we report preliminary results from a collaborative research project that aims to examine multiple factors in both first (L1) and second language (L2) processing as informed by behavioral and electrophysiological data. We first briefly introduce the general questions being addressed by this project along with the two specific research questions being addressed in this talk: (a) whether individual differences in L1 processing is predictive of L2 processing, and (b) the role of frequency effects in L1 processing. Then, we provide a brief overview of the research design and the critical event-related potentials of interest (i.e., the N400 and P600). Next, we report preliminary results based on our specific research questions. Our results suggest that (a) L1 processing may predict L2 processing for some linguistic structures, and (b) frequency effects may not modulate grammatical processing. Finally, we offer a brief conclusion regarding leveraging data in a collaborative project for multiple purposes.
